Spinal Stenosis Causes,Symptoms,and Treatment

Spinal Stenosis is a condition that causes back and neck pain, pain in the shoulders, arms and/or fingers, cramps, and even numbness in the fingers and feet. Severe spinal stenosis can result in blockage of the bowels  or urinary bladder. There are other sources of back pain that can be confused with stenosis,  so it is advised to seek the advice of a specialist if you encounter any of these symptoms.

Cause Of Spinal Stenosis

The primary risk factor for spinal stenosis is old age.Persons over fifty account for the vast majority of cases. The cause of stenosis of the spine results from arthritic damage to the bones that surround the spine. The arthritic deterioration narrows the aperture through which the spinal cord passes. This aperture is called the spinal canal, and as it becomes obstructed by arthritic deteriorations, dislodged or disintegrating vertebrae or even bone spurs, the spinal cord comes into contact with this material.

Some of the vertebrae deteriorate and their fluid-filled insulation membranes that provide a ushion between the vertebrae may leak and disintegrate. When the spinal cord comes into contact with this material, the result is pain, numbness, and tingling sensations in the habds and/or feet. Stenosis of the spine can also result from an accident or from  trying to pick up a heavy object.

Symptoms

Spinal stenosis symptoms are varied because the spine is a complex network of bones, cartilidge, tendons and fluid-filled membranes that extend from your neck to your tail bone that has has many different parts. Injury or degradation to any part of this network can produce different symptoms. For example,if the damage to the spine is in your neck, the cervical section of the spine, you will be diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis. Symptoms of this version of stenosis are pain in the neck and shoulders and sometimes down through the arms and hands. Numbness and/or tingling in these extremities may also occur. If the damage is in the lower section of your back, the lumbar section. Lumbar spinal canal stenosis is most often centered around the legs and feet and movement from or to a sitting position can be very painful. In some extreme cases the patient may experience bladder or bowel control, as spinal stenosis sometimes interferes with these bodily functions. If this occurs, the patient should see his doctor immediately.

Spinal Stenosis Diagnosis
Some people who are suffering from spinal stenosis pain will try to manage their pain themselves. But if theirs is a degenerative condition or if they experience pain in their legs that increases when they walk and subsides when they sit, it is likely that their pain is caused by stenosis.

Treatment

Spinal Stenosis treatment can begin in the early stages with OTC pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen. Analgesics like Tylenol can also be taken although they do not target inflammation. Some non-prescription supplements like glucosamine have also produced positive results on osteoarthritis. If a person is experiencing these symptoms, he definitely needs to consult a physician. Diagnosing back pain as spinal stenosis can only be made by aspecialist, and treatment needs to be carefully planned.

The patient might be able to manage his stenosis through medication and a spinal stenosis exercise regimen or physical therapy, but if his stenosis is degenerative, spinal stenosis surgery is the most likely option.
