Purchasing a new mattress is an important decision, and if you have back pain, it’s even more important to select the best mattress that will help alleviate your condition.

<script type="text/javascript"

Here is some basic information on the best matches of mattress types for specific back pain conditions plus the most comfortable sleeping positions for each:

1. Osteoarthritis – If you suffer from osteoarthritis you will probably find that it is more comfortable for you to sleep on your side with your knees pulled up towards your chest as if you were in the fetal position. Raising your knees opens up the joints of the spine and should help relieve some of the pressure. The best type of bed for this condition is an adjustable bed, as the head and legs can be raised giving a similar effect to sleeping in the fetal position.

2. Degenerative Disk Condition – Degenerative disk disease is a particularly difficult condition. If you suffer from this condition you will probably find that sleeping on your stomach with a flat pillow positioned under your hips and stomach will give you the most comfort. This position should relieve some of the pressure on the disks, and a you’ll find that a relatively firm mattress will work best for you.

3. Hip Pain – If you have hip pain, sleeping on your side more is usually more comfortable than anything else. If you get some comfort from sleeping this way, try putting a soft pillow between your knees as this will relieve a lot of the pressure from across the top of your hips and should relieve your pain. The best type of mattress is likely to be a medium to firm mattress, but this condition it is very much left up to individual preference.

4. Non-Specific Back Pain – If you have non-specific back pain or some other form of lower back pain, you might benefit from sleeping on your back with a pillow placed below slightly raised knees. In general, when you bend your knees when you sleep on your back, it will reduce strain on your lower back muscles.

The same phenomenon is true when you’re sitting down at a desk for long periods of time or are standing on your feet all day. If you can find a piece of wood or something to rest one of your feet on, it will reduce the strain on your lower back. If you have to stand a lot, if you could find something to put your foot on, like a box or step, then shift from one foot to the other every fifteen minutes, you will reduce strain on your lower back and there will be less pain.

One final tip that has helped a lot of back pain sufferers is to sleep in a reclining chair or on one of the many adjustable beds that are available nowadays. If you notice that your back pain is worse when standing upright but better when bent forward slightly, using an adjustable chair or bed will benefit you.

Upper Back Pain Causes

Back pain is in general a common problem that every one faces. It is a vulnerable problem that a person of any age experiences. Children, Adults, Pregnant woman, or a person of old age can also face the back pain problem. There may be several factors behind your back pain problem as it is not restricted only to one particular reason. And so people needs to face loads of trouble during back pain to cure it. Your prime duty is to know the causes and take some preventive measures so that you need not feel the pain during backache.

There can be varied causes for back pain:
Lumbar Muscle Strain: Straining of muscles is the most common cause of low back pain. Chances are bright in this case that a patient may completely feel relieve from muscle strain.

Spondylolisthesis: In this case the adjacent vertebra becomes unbalanced and begins to ’slip’ which causes back pain and if it still prolongs then back pain can turn to be a serious problem.

Osteoporosis: A patient needs to face this problem because of compression fracture of the vertebra. You may face orthopedic problem and much of uneasiness too. It also leads to feeble bones.

Ruptured Disc: It is also called as Herniated Disc which causes back pain. The treatment of herniated disc depends and differs on an individual’s condition and circumstances. It is incorrectly being called in general as ‘Slipped Disc’, affecting the spine, in which a tear in the outer, fibrous ring of an intervertebral disc allows the soft, central portion to bulge out. Herniated Discs are found in S of adults older than 20.

Spinal Stenosis: This is a medical condition in which the spinal canal narrows and compresses the spinal cord and nerve. In the aging population, when the spinal canal becomes too stiff then it can result into back pain. A patient suffering under this situation may even feel minor trauma causing irritation and nerve root impingement which indirectly results into back ache.

There are many of causes of back ache that can put you into serious health trouble. For acute back pain the underlying cause is meniscoid occlusion. You may get startled to know that the lower back pain causes also differ as per the person’s age. Some of the common causes of back pain for adults under age 50 include spinal disc, herniation and degenerative disc disease or isthmic spondylolisthesis. And for adults over age 50 include osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) and spinal stenosis, trauma, cancer, infection, fractures, and inflammatory disease.

Thus, to cure your back pain you need to practice exercises regularly. Collect information to know back pain causes and if the situation worsens then it is highly recommended to consult doctor for the betterment of your health.

There is also a condition called spinal stenosis, in which the vertebrae can become constricted as a result of the aging process.

Spinal stenosis is narrowing of any of the vertebral openings that nerves go through. The narrowing compresses the nerve, and symptoms appear due to impaired nerve function. The spine is composed of approximately 33 interlocking bones, called vertebrae. It has two major functions: structural and functional. Structurally, the spine allows us to stand upright, provides a place for muscles, tendons and other bones to attach to, and gives us the flexibility to turn, bend and twist. Functionally, the spine provides protection for the spinal cord and distribution of spinal nerves.

The spinal cord carries all the messages between our brains and our bodies. Some of the fibers carry motor (movement) instructions to the body, and some carry sensation information to the brain. A pair of spinal nerves branch off of the cord and exit the spine between each pair of vertebrae, carrying messages to and from the body in that area. Nerves from the cervical spine go to the face, neck and diaphragm. Thoracic nerves go to the arms and chest. Lumbar nerves go to the hips, legs, rectum, urethra and sexual organs.

Each vertebra has a total of five openings that nerves pass through: the spinal canal, which contains the spinal cord, two neural foramina, or openings in the bone for the nerve root, and two intervertebral spaces. Spinal stenosis occurs when any of these openings is narrowed enough to compress a nerve.

Some people are born with spinal stenosis, or a congenital narrowing of the spinal canal or other openings. Spinal stenosis can be secondary to other congenital abnormalities, such as scoliosis or achondroplasia.

Most of the time, people acquire spinal stenosis as they age; it’s rare in people younger than 50. Calcium deposits develop in the ligaments between vertebrae, we grow bone spurs, the vertebra don’t fit together like they once did and they slip out of alignmentthese are normal changes that occur as we get older, but they can cause spinal stenosis. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in the discs and facet joints contribute to spinal stenosis, too.

There are a few conditions that cause spinal stenosis that are neither congenital nor the result of aging. Tumors can invade any of the spinal spaces and compress nerves. Paget’s disease is a bone disorder that causes the vertebrae to thicken, obstructing the openings. Fluorosis, or excessive exposure to fluoride, causes calcification of the ligaments around the spinal openings. The posterior longitudinal ligament, which runs down the back behind the spinal cord, may turn to bone and put pressure on nerves.

Although there are several causes of spinal stenosis, the mechanism is always the same: a narrowed opening compresses a nerve, and that causes sensory and functional symptoms
